AVG 8.x - maybe a gotcha

Postby sdclee on Wed Jul 01, 2009 1:00 am

My Vista Ultimate notebook has been running at 100% CPU for a few days and even with the use of sysinternals tools I have been unable to see what the cause of the problem was. I removed a few pieces of recently installed software but it made no difference. Safe mode was fine.
I stopped AVG 8.5 and (even though it was not scanning) the CPU dropped to 8%.
I decided to remove it before considering resinstalling it (or trying Kaspersky). and noticed that whist uninstalling it had some version 7.x elements.
Maybe conflicting modules?

Ah, there's your problem. AVG 8. Sadly, they are trying to be like Norton and McAfee ... tooooo much crap and toooo much resources!

Suggest trying Avast! Home Free.

Oh, and disable the Webshield and make it permanent. Unlike AVG acting like you did something stupid and wrong, Avast let's you be in control on what parts you use. The Webshield is a hog so I disable it. Also messes with some webpages from what I understand.
